Hoodia gordonii, “Whoo De Ah”, is the scientific name for a leafless, spiky succulent plant that grows throughout the semi-arid desert areas of Southern Africa primarily the Kalahari Desert. The local inhabitants (the San) have eaten Hoodia stems to defend against hunger and thirst when on long journeys or during times of drought, because it acts as an appetite suppressant.
